The God of Fashion?

I am sitting here completely dumbfounded as to why people are in such a tizzy over Julie Fredrickson's interview with Anna Wintour.  I honestly thought it was pretty cool of Julie to make the effort and get a positive response from Anna, however brief.  I will say that I wasn't all "Wow, she spoke with Anna Wintour."  I'd probably be more impressed sitting down with Julie rather than Anna.  But that's just me.  I'm not into the hype that everyone else seems to be swimming in.  Anna Wintour is a dominant presence in the fashion world but she is not the God of Fashion.  Sure, a good review or a mention in Vogue would be great but I will still feel complete in my life if that never happens.  If I was in Anna Wintour's proximity and I was a reporter (as Julie was/is), common sense would tell me to ask for an interview.  People would want to hear what she had to say.  I think Julie's got ballocks (excuse the old English colloquialism).

I just cannot understand Fashiontribes' take on "Ambushing Anna Wintour with for an Impromptu Interview".  I'm missing something.  They go on to say later in the post, something about "...having breached established etiquette - whether intentional or not - without thinking about the consequences and how it reflects on the way bloggers are perceived by the industry."  So what and who cares?  I know that bloggers want to be taken seriously but since when does actually taking initiative constitute "renegade blogger tactics"?  The fact of the matter is that bloggers are not traditional media and if we have use non-traditional methods to get the information that we want, so be it.  Julie didn't do anything deceitful or manipulative.  I consider myself a mild opportunist so I take chances in order to get what I want but I'm not devious.  I would have done the same thing.  Apparently, there are many who do not agree and are actually parting ways with Coutorture.  Yeah, I guess it's that serious.  Again, I just don't understand.  I welcome comments from anyone who would like to try and make me understand.  Good luck.

Well, The Runway Scoop, shares my views.  We kind of think people are just Hatin'.  Funny how WWD didn't take a negative point of view when reporting about Julie's interview.  After all, Anna Wintour is a grown women and she knows how to say "No" just like I do, which actually she said to Julie on an earlier occasion, if I recall correctly.  Could it be that Anna remembered her and perhaps didn't mind giving an interview?  Is that just not possible?  Anna Wintour is but a women.  I just had to reiterate that point.

I can understand where it might appear to be a bit of a tempest in a teapot with regard to the reaction of Fashiontribes & other blogs to the behavior of Coutorture & Julie Fredrickson during the recent Fashionweek. However, many of us have worked extremely hard - in my case almost 2 years - to build up the reputation of online fashion reporting. While most people online are fairly forward-looking, a good percentage of the traditional fashion "gatekeepers" are much less so, and it hurts our coverage if we're unable to get access to shows or to interview insiders.

It's not that we're "hatin" as you say; it's actually nothing personal. But being critical of a PR firm like KCD publicly, the attempt to interview Anna Wintour, and having amateurs in the photo pit, as well as giving the impression that bloggers galore were "sneaking" into shows & generally causing mayhem reflects badly on all fashion bloggers, and is likely to have consequences in terms of access on all levels.

The bottom line is that it makes us appear extremely unprofessional, which then means we're dismissed & not taken seriously.

Thank you for your comment, Lesley. I also read the post on Style Bites and found it to be informative. It's hard for me to comment on the broad spectrum of issues b/c I am here in Dallas and am really just a voyeur. My comments were mainly directed towards the Anna Wintour interview and I still think I would have done the same thing (hopefully with a few good questions). I'm sure things did not go as smoothly as Julie planned but hopefully she will learn from her mistakes if she is to do this kind of Fashion Week reporting again. I personally thought she could have dressed a bit better but she has always said she is a basics kind of girl. Anyway, I will see where Coutotrure takes us in the near future. She seems to be a pretty cool girl so I will give her a chance (a personal point of view).

I also wish you the best of luck. I love your blog and thought your fashion week reporting was excellent (as it was last season). Nothing about your blog (and other sites) says unprofessional so I know you will do well despite the perceived negativity surrounding Coutorture at this time.

        Best,

        Camille
